I have the tendency, so I am making it up when the device works well. I purchased one in September 2009. This one has an accumulated running time of 45722 hours (i.e. Aug 01, 2018  hard disk failure window pops up saying disk failing, reporting failure disk name wdc wd5000aaks-75ygao ata device volume d; c; any idea what this is? How often do you get the message? When did it start? What were you doing when it occurred? Did it crash the system or allow you to continue working? What was the EXACT text of the message (including any codes (or was it only what you stated in the title)?

Go to Start / All Programs / Accessories / Command prompt and right click on command prompt and click run as Administrator.
Type sfc /scannow and enter and let it run. It will scan and try to fix some of your system files. Hopefully it will complete with no corruption it could not repair (if there is such corruption post back here or try to analyze it to find the problem file(s) using
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/928228. Try to post any corrupted files here so we can see if they can be repaired with good copies from the installation disk (unless there are too many).
While in Command Prompt, type chkdsk /f /r and enter and let it run. It will want to schedule itself to run at the next restart. Answer yes and then reboot to run the program. It will scan and try to fix any corruption or bad sectors on your hard drive and mostly remove that as a potential cause.

If that doesn't work, then please post any repeating error messages from the Event Viewer concerning tje hard disk (Start / Control Panel / Administrative Tools / Event Viewer – or typing eventvwr from the command prompt starting from C:WindowsSystem32). Here's how to use Event Viewer: http://www.petri.co.il/vista-event-viewer.htm. Look especially in the System section.

Let's test your hard drive and RAM for hardware problems:

To test your hard drive, check the manufacturer and then get the diagnostic utility from: http://www.techsupportforum.com/hardware-support/hard-drive-support/302602-hard-drive-diagnostic-utilities.html (and/or get one from your hard drive or computer manufacturer if they have one available – it wouldn’t hurt to try both). If it fails the test, replace it. If it passes the test, then there's probably nothing wrong with it.
You can also test your RAM at http://www.memtest.org/. If it fails, test each chip individually to find those that are bad and replace them. If it passes, RAM is probably OK.

Hopefully one of these procedures will either identiry and/or resolve the probllem. It sounds like you hard disk is going bad but I don't recognize the error but suspect it includes the name of your hard drive. It is likely that chkdks will find a lot of corruption and may not be able to correct all or it or may even be unable to complete the process. If it runs for more than 2 hours, it is stalled and you should power down and reboot and try again. It is also likely that the diagnostic tests (run both of them if you can find both diagnostic software tools) will come back showing errors. I think your hard drive is about to fail totally and is in the process of failing partially at the moment. I suggest you backup anything you want to save while you still have time and keep it updated until we can resolve this problem (perhaps by installing a replacement hard drive if necessary). It could still be a software problem - maybe a device driver issue - but I wouldn't put money on that - but it the chkdsk and diagnostic tests come up clean we'll examine that possibility to rule it out.

I hope this helps. I look forward to your reply with answers and results of the scans and procedures recommended above. Please do them all. I need your help to help you. If I could work on your machine in person or remotely I would, but I can't so I have to rely on you to do the hard work and then provide me with as much feedback and information as you can so I can try to discover the cause of the problem and suggest more procedures or perhpas even a resolution.

BTW. here's an article on hardware troubleshooting which might come in handy and offer some suggestions I didn't include above. It's worth a quick review: http://elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Hardware_Tshoot.
